Tutorial: Filling Your Puck Bean Bag | New Braunfels Portrait Photographer

Ok, so last year I decided to sew up my own newborn posing puck (a bean bag with a flat surface).  I had no idea how difficult it was going to be to fill it with 3-4 bags of bean bag beads.  Those little suckers had so much static – they were everywhere but where they were supposed to be!!  It also didn’t help that I was trying to tackle the job by myself with my 2 year old (1 at the time).  He thought it was hilarous to run and jump on the bean bag and see all the beads fly out everywhere!  It was kind of cute, I’m not going to lie.  😉

One year later I am really disliking that my bean bag is so big (I’m barely 5’1 and this thing has a 42″ diameter) and not to mention that my kids, who think it’s a toy for them, tore a hole in it.  So, it’s time for a new one!  Yay, I’m already dreading trying to fill this new one with the beads and dealing with the huge mess of the aftermath.  With my first bean bag I tried pouring in the beads, I tried doing it in the bathroom that was hot and steamy, I even used a cup (a very slow process), but it took forever and I lost like half of the beads throughout my house!!

It’s go time… as my mom, who is visiting for the day, is watching me make another huge mess trying to fill my new bean bag keeps suggesting things to try and nothing is still working easily.  THEN, she tells me to grab BABY POWDER <—– get your hands on some of this…. a LOT of it!!  Worked like a charm!  So what I did was cut open a hole, nothing big, into the bag of beads and just start pouring the baby powder in there.  Immediately, you’ll notice that the beads stop sticking to the side of the bag – JACKPOT!  Then, I squeezed the hole shut and shook the bag to make sure the baby powder was making its way around the bag.  Next, I got an empty oatmeal container, removed the lid, and cut out the bottom.  This was going to be my funnel.  Before I started pouring I added some baby powder to the inside of the bean bag for good measure.  To fill the bean bag, my mom held the bean bag with the oatmeal container inside the hole, and I started pouring the beans.  SCORE!  If the beans started sticking, we would pause to add some more baby powder (don’t be shy about it), and then start pouring again.  We still made a little mess because I wanted my bean bag nice in full, but nothing like the mess I made with my first bean bag.

Seriously, BABY POWDER saved the day… and my mom too!  😉

I also used an empty oatmeal canister with no lid and the bottom cut out to aid as a funnel.  See that tiny bottle of baby powder below?  You’ll need way more than that!!!

Kim - Hi! What type of beads did you use? I just bought a puck bean bag and I’m not sure what type of beads I should buy to add more filling. Thank you and thanks for the tip!

Lindsey1006 - Hi Kim! I purchased some from Wal-Mart online. Here’s the link… http://www.walmart.com/ip/Bag-of-Beads-Bean-Bag-Refill-3.5-Cubic-Feet/5691347

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks!
Lindsey

Pat Trudell - I’m in the market for a newborn poser, but wanted to say that I bought some fill for a regular bean bag chair and you’re right … it went everywhere. So what I did was put some fabric softener sheets in the bag and shook it for awhile. Came back later … shook it again. They were tame then…those little devils.
